I think his tone is possesive, but then again I think he already let the girl go so there is nothing he can do about it. I think he's sure that whatever is in her character that makes her want to explore the world and herself isn't in his. He's sure she'll see him and his world view to be too small for her when she gets back. But while she's gone he'll repress those thoughts with the hopeful thoughts that she "belongs" to him. Just my take on it, that possiveness is his defense against growing up himself. I like the song, though.
