adventures in cooking

one of my cookbooks has an easy and delicious-sounding recipe for chilled cucumber and yogurt soup. you basically grate the cucumber, mix it in to the yogurt, add white wine vinegar, garlic, mint (but i don't like mint), salt, and pepper, and then chill. easy, right? and then, after i stirred everything in and tasted it to see if it needed more spice, i realized that i had acquired vanilla yogurt. d'oh! elaine is dumb. it actually tastes surprisingly good, all things considered, so i will eat it over the next few days. still, that was ridiculous.

I wish they'd make plain vs. vanilla more obvious, I hate vanilla yogurt! I'm glad it didn't make the soup inedible.

Yeah, it would've been nice if the containers were less alike. There was a picture of a vanilla flower, which I only noticed too late, but other than that, they were the same. I don't mind vanilla yogurt so much, but definitely not with my cucumber! Heh. Now, I've got slightly sweet, cucumbery soup with a kick from the garlic. Weird combo.

I've totally done exactly that same thing!!

I too love cucumber soup - the recipe I know is just cucumbers, yogurt, garlic, chicken stock, and walnuts on top. Yum. But I've totally made it with vanilla yogurt by mistake before. It's just one of those "doh!!" moments ...

Heh. It's comforting that I'm not the only one who makes silly mistakes like that. I blame Trader Joe's partly...the packaging was nearly identical on the yogurts!

I haven't heard the walnuts thing, or the chicken stock. I can't add chicken stock (the whole milk and meat thing), but walnuts on top sound yummy! Maybe next time, with the correct yogurt...
