The context that being in a same-sex couple is something that people are born into, or at least that some people are born into having a choice between being in a same-sex couple and remaining single for their entire lives — remember that many of the proponents of Proposition 8 think of sex between people of the same gender as a voluntary choice, not an unavoidable orientation.
