"the one who needs it the least controls the partnership."
SO CYNICAL! SO MISTRUSTING! SO HEARTLESS!
love shoudn't be like a negotiation between two business partners, each with self-interested motives. what an awful game. and not one I'm going to play.
it's all about the powers of the mysterious "open-hand..." *cue ominous music* (dun, dun DAH!...)
i agree that love isn't a game like that...it's just a fact that when one person needs the other one a lot more, the one who needs less is in control. that doesn't mean they should take advantage of that fact, but it's just how it is. and it isn't just in love...have you ever had a friend you really wanted to stay friends with, but who didn't care as much? it's the same thing...the person who doesn't care as much is in control, because they can hurt you even if they don't mean to. the one that cares more is more dependent.
and in terms of self-interested motives...it's actually quite the opposite sometimes. it's possible to want to make someone happy, yet not have that opportunity because they won't let you get close enough to do it. and that hurts...and once again, the person who cares less is the one who sets the tone for the interactions.
oooh... and while you're at it,
