here's your daily dose of poetry, courtesy of dorothy parker, our favorite cynical poet.

The Red Dress.
by Dorothy Parker

I always saw, I always said
If I were grown and free,
I'd have a gown of reddest red
As fine as you could see,

To wear out walking, sleek and slow,
Upon a summer day.
And there'd be one to see me so,
And flip the world away.

And he would be a gallant one,
With stars behind his eyes,
And hair like metal in the sun,
And lips too warm for lies.

I always saw us, gay and good,
High honored in the town.
Now I am grown to womanhood...
I have the silly gown.

hehehe...great poem, that. silly gown indeed. funny how things get associated with honor and such, no?

The Flaw in Paganism
by Dorothy Parker

Drink and dance and laugh and lie,
Love, the reeling midnight through,
For tomorrow we shall die!
(But, alas, we never do.)

lol...yes, that's always how it is...you want to seize the moment, but the problem with that is that you still have to deal with people and life and such, so impulsive can't be completely free, but rather controlled...yeah, i don't know how much sense that made. anyways. moving on.

Healed
by Dorothy Parker

Oh, when I flung my heart away,
The year was at its fall.
I saw my dear, the other day,
Beside a flowering wall;
And this was all I had to say:
"I thought that he was tall!"

hehehe...people are always different when you're in love with them...and then later, it's surprising when they're really not all that. this reminds me of cindy and ralph. yes.

Distance
by Dorothy Parker

Were you to cross the world, my dear,
To work or love or fight,
I could be calm and wistful here,
And close my eyes at night.

It were a sweet and gallant pain
To be a sea apart;
But, oh, to have you have you down the lane
Is bitter to my heart.

yeah, too true. it's easier to be ok with someone far away because you know you can't really see them. but if they're near but you can't be with them for whatever reason, that's harder. it's like this quote that used to be on our locker, "The worst way to miss someone is to have them sitting right next to you and know you can never have them." Funny grammar, yes, but true.

Comment
by Dorothy Parker

Oh, life is a glorious cycle of song,
A medley of extemporania;
And love is a thing that can never go wrong;
And I am Marie of Roumania.

hehe...this was the poem that got cindy and me hooked on dorothy parker. she's just so funny! very good for cynical moods and such.

One Perfect Rose
by Dorothy Parker

A single flow'r he sent me, since we met.
All tenderly his messenger he chose;
Deep-hearted, pure, with scented dew still wet --
One perfect rose.

I knew the language of the floweret;
"My fragile leaves," it said, "his heart enclose."
Love long has taken for his amulet
One perfect rose.

Why is it no one ever sent me yet
One perfect limousine, do you suppose?
Ah no, it's always just my luck to get
One perfect rose.

hehe...love that one...perfect rose! isn't she great?

yes...that's all for now. i had a good weekend, but i don't feel like updating about it right now. it was fun and i got to see my sister and rachel, which was very nice and probably the highlight of the weekend. more later if i feel like it.
